The inspiration for the character of Reyna Putnam in Substitute for Love came when Karin watched then candidate Cheney dance around the issues of LGBT rights as if his own daughter’s life wouldn’t have been improved had he cared enough to spend any of his political capital on her. Who wants to be that guy’s flesh-and-blood? What is the price when your needs conflict with his plans?
For the record, Karin can’t paint or play an instrument (so writes about both), has trouble following a recipe (ergo the food porn), and has little aptitude for hard science (even though smart is the new sexy). She does have a marginal talent for double-entry bookkeeping. All of this explains why Car Pool and Above Temptation feature super sexy accountants who love music and food.
Karin has named several books after songs, including Substitute for Love (Madonna), Stepping Stone (Duffy), Unforgettable (Nat King Cole), Wild Things (Cris Williamson) and The Kiss that Counted (Catie Curtis).
