There's no doubt that Painted Moon will take you on an emotional roller coaster, but you will certainly enjoy the ride... Beautifully sensitive.

There’s no doubt that Painted Moon will take you on an emotional roller coaster, but you will certainly enjoy the ride. Karin Kallmakers’ beautifully sensitive depiction of two women’s journeys to self-affirmation is both sexually stimulating, and at times painfully realistic, striking some nerves too close to home to ignore.

The issues Kallmaker explores are some of the most controversial for lesbians, but they are the ones that we need to address most. Kallmaker has Leah, who is dealing with the death of her lover, and Jackie how had never questioned her heterosexuality, thrust into isolation with each other for several days. The story thoughtfully and intelligently takes the issues of love and sexuality and reasons them out to a satisfying conclusion. Painted Moon shows the true struggle we all encounter as we go through the process of self-discover.

Painted Moon was never what I would call predictable but instead proved to be thoroughly enjoyable and satisfying. The passion will leave you breathless, the romance will have you longing for more, and the depth and reality of the pain and sorrow will move you to tears.

Although the ending is somewhat sappy, it comes as quite a relief. I would say that this is a must read. – Jean Rosalia
